£75 fines introduced for litter and dog mess in Adur and Worthing

Residents and visitors in Adur and Worthing face £75 fines for dropping litter or failing to clean up after their dogs, as councils launch a new enforcement scheme.

From Monday, 29 September, National Enforcement Solutions (NES) will operate along the coastline, green spaces and shopping areas to issue fines to those responsible for littering, dog fouling and fly-tipping. The service has been contracted for 12 months by Adur and Worthing Councils in an effort to improve the cleanliness of streets, parks and seafronts.

Council leaders said the scheme aims to deter the minority of people who cause mess in public areas, while supporting council staff who are responsible for cleaning the streets. The councils confirmed that NES officers will have the authority to issue fixed penalty notices of £75 to anyone caught offending.

The councils added that they will work with NES, businesses and community stakeholders to maximise the benefits of the trial. The initiative is designed to help Adur and Worthing achieve their goal of becoming “the cleanest, greenest coastal communities in the UK."
