Adur and Worthing Councils propose tougher rules on jet skis and dinghies

Adur and Worthing Councils are planning to tighten regulations on watercraft following a rise in jet ski and inflatable dinghy usage, which has prompted safety concerns during the summer bathing season.
The councils said the number of high-speed watercraft off the local coastlines has grown significantly in recent years, with some users entering designated swimming zones and endangering bathers. In 2024, over 60 people were warned about their behaviour by coastal officers, prompting renewed efforts to modernise local byelaws.
The proposed changes include banning certain watercraft from swimming areas and increasing penalties for violations, with fines of up to £500. Coastal teams will also be equipped with bodyworn cameras to gather evidence for enforcement. A public consultation is due to begin in the coming weeks to gather views from residents, businesses and stakeholders before any new regulations are introduced.
