Adur publishes new air quality strategy for consultation

A draft strategy aimed at improving air quality and protecting public health in Adur has been published for consultation.
Adur District Council’s proposed plan focuses on reducing harmful emissions including nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates, largely generated by road traffic. The strategy follows the revocation of two Air Quality Management Areas in Shoreham High Street and Southwick Old Shoreham Road, which were originally introduced in 2005 due to high pollution levels but removed in 2024 after sustained improvements.
The draft measures include improving the council’s vehicle fleet, updating taxi licensing policies, expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure and installing anti idling signage at key locations. The plan also supports the development of car clubs and enhancements to walking and cycling infrastructure, alongside addressing emissions from domestic and commercial burning.
Residents, businesses and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the proposals before they are finalised. The consultation runs until March 22, 2026, with details and a survey available via the Adur and Worthing Councils website.
