AI cameras introduced to detect mobile phone and seatbelt offences

New artificial intelligence cameras have been introduced to help police detect drivers using mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts, as part of efforts to improve road safety.

The technology, recently deployed by Sussex Police, is designed to target two of the so-called fatal five causes of serious road collisions. Data shows that in recent years dozens of collisions have involved mobile phone use, while hundreds of people have been injured in incidents where seatbelts were not worn. A previous trial of the system identified hundreds of offences within a week, including cases involving both violations.

Police say the cameras are intended to support, rather than replace, traditional enforcement by providing additional insight into driver behaviour and allowing resources to be used more effectively. The initiative is funded through road safety recovery costs and forms part of a wider national campaign focused on improving compliance with seatbelt laws. The cameras will be in place for several weeks before their impact is reviewed.
