Broadwater Baptist Church reopens after major refurbishment

Broadwater Baptist Church in Worthing has officially reopened its sanctuary following a two-year refurbishment project that included major structural repairs and interior improvements. The work marks the end of a challenging five-year period for the congregation.

The church, originally built in 1937 and expanded in the 1960s, faced significant structural problems when its roof and front wall were found to be unsafe. Emergency repairs and a full roof replacement were required, costing around £350,000. The funding was met through community donations, including contributions from former pastor the Rev David Hill and his wife, Susan, as well as an anonymous £35,000 gift for solar panels.

The refurbishment, completed in September, has transformed the interior of the sanctuary. Traditional pews were replaced with individual chairs, providing greater flexibility for worship and community use. Church secretary Paul Rycroft and minister the Rev Jason Gain said the upgrades have revitalised the building’s atmosphere and created a more welcoming space for a variety of activities and events.
