Caravans remain at Goring Gap after notice to vacate issued

A group of travellers who set up an encampment at Goring Gap in Worthing have been served with a notice to vacate the land, but caravans remained on site several days later.

Seven caravans were reported to have arrived on Friday night, April 10, with police called to the scene the following day. West Sussex County Council confirmed an unauthorised encampment and issued notice for the group to leave, warning that court proceedings would follow if necessary. Witnesses report that as of April 16th the encampment was still in place.

The situation comes amid wider debate at Worthing Borough Council over how to manage repeated encampments at the Greenswards. Conservative councillors proposed allocating funding for preventative measures such as earth bunding, but the council’s Labour leadership said the cost would not be proportionate or effective. The authority stated it would continue working with partners including police and the county council to respond lawfully, balancing the impact on residents with the rights of travelling communities.
