Community Turns Out for Historic Tarring Market

Residents gathered in Tarring for the annual Charter Market, enjoying a mix of traditional entertainment, local crafts and food in the historic grounds of the Old Palace.
The market, held on the last Saturday of the schools’ summer half-term, featured performances from the Worthing Silver Band and High Street Harmony, as well as dancing from the Sompting Morris Dancers. Visitors browsed a range of stalls offering cakes, jams, books, crafts, plants and more, alongside a BBQ, children’s activities, raffle and tombola.
First established in 1444 through a royal charter, Tarring Market once served as a key corn trading hub for West Sussex. Though its commercial significance declined in the 19th century, the event has been revived by the Parochial Church Council as a community fun day, raising funds for both local and national charities.
