Concerns Raised Over Damage to Worthing Community Woodland

Concerns have been raised about environmental damage to a community woodland on the edge of Hill Barn Golf Course in Worthing. The site was planted as part of a millennium tree-planting scheme more than 25 years ago and has been maintained by volunteers since then.

Worthing Borough Council has expressed concern about damage to trees and habitats within the woodland, which is believed to be linked to informal mountain bike trails. Councillor Martin McCabe, the council’s cabinet member for the environment, said the woodland had been carefully created and looked after over many years and that concerns about damage should be taken seriously.

After concerns were raised by residents, Mr McCabe contacted the South Downs National Park Authority to ask whether planning or enforcement action could be taken. Officers confirmed the woodland is protected by a Tree Preservation Order but said enforcement is difficult unless a specific individual can be identified.

Mr McCabe said he would continue working with the national park authority, the landowner and other stakeholders to explore ways of protecting the woodland while recognising the need for safe and responsible recreational use of outdoor spaces.
