Dogs Trust warns Shoreham pet owners of frozen lake dangers

Dog owners are being advised to keep their pets away from frozen lakes and ponds after a warning from Dogs Trust in Shoreham during the current spell of cold weather.
The animal charity said dogs are at risk of falling through ice that may appear solid but can give way under their weight, leading to potentially life threatening situations. The warning follows recent cold weather alerts issued by the Met Office across the UK.
Dogs Trust said owners should keep dogs on a lead when walking near water and should never attempt a rescue if a dog falls through ice, as this could put their own life at risk. Instead, owners are advised to encourage their dog to swim back to the edge and call 999, while also following wider winter safety advice including checking ID details, protecting dogs from cold conditions and being alert to hazards such as antifreeze.
