Emergency Roadworks on Lyndhurst Road After Surface Hole Found in Worthing

A section of Lyndhurst Road in Worthing has been closed for emergency roadworks after a surface hole was discovered during a routine inspection.

The eastbound lane closure, implemented in agreement with West Sussex County Council, includes temporary traffic signals and a banned right turn from Park Road.

The incident was first reported by Hemiko, the developer behind the Worthing Heat Network project, on Thursday 17 July. A small hole was identified by one of the company’s staff and promptly reported, with its cause still under investigation. The developer warned that such holes can be early signs of subsurface issues and has taken the lead in coordinating a joint investigation with all local utility providers.

Southern Water has been contacted to investigate any potential infrastructure failures beneath the road. As of Tuesday, two-way traffic lights remain in place between Saw Mill Place and Park Road, and engineers have begun cutting into the surface to assess the underlying damage. Drivers are advised to expect delays while repair works continue.
