Engineers assess storm damage at Worthing Pier

Engineers have begun detailed investigations into storm damage at Worthing Pier as part of a project to plan permanent repairs following severe weather.

Council engineers, working with structural specialists from Mackley and HOP Consulting, have examined damage caused by storms in October 2024 that affected several of the pier’s supporting piles.

A temporary steel support structure has already been installed beneath the pier to provide additional strength. During the latest site visit, teams examined both the damaged piles and the temporary supports to determine the scale and requirements of the permanent repair work, with photographs showing excavation of concrete foundations around a broken pile.

Repair work is expected to take place later this year, with construction planned for the summer and autumn when weather and tidal conditions are more favourable. The council said this approach should allow the work to be completed more quickly and cost effectively while keeping the pier open, as part of wider investment plans along Worthing’s seafront and town centre.
