Government announces rail fare freeze for commuters

The government has announced a nationwide freeze on regulated rail fares, a move expected to save commuters hundreds of pounds on season tickets. The policy, confirmed by the Department for Transport, will apply to season tickets, peak returns and off-peak returns between major cities.

Tom Rutland, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham, welcomed the decision, saying it would help residents who rely on rail services for commuting. The government said travellers on high-cost routes could save more than £300 per year. Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated the measure forms part of a wider plan to ease living costs and support passengers.

The fare freeze is linked to proposals to rebuild the rail network under a new publicly owned body, Great British Railways, aimed at improving ticketing systems and reliability. Campaign for Better Transport also supported the announcement, highlighting cost as the primary concern for rail users.
