Government delays decision on West Sussex council reorganisation

The government has delayed making a decision on how West Sussex will be divided under proposed local government reorganisation, citing concerns about the plans put forward.

In a letter to council leaders, the Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government said further consideration was needed following consultation feedback. Proposals included a single unitary authority for the area or a split into two authorities, but concerns were raised about how well these options reflected local identities and economic differences.

Ministers are now exploring alternative arrangements, including grouping coastal areas such as Worthing and Adur together while placing more rural districts with inland authorities. A final decision is expected before a Structural Change Order is presented to Parliament, with elections planned for May 2027 and the new councils due to become operational in April 2028.
