Increased police patrols planned in Worthing over Christmas period

Residents and shoppers in Worthing have been told to expect an increased police presence over the Christmas and New Year period, as Sussex Police steps up patrols under the national Safer Streets Winter of Action initiative.

Police said the winter campaign will focus on preventing town centre crime, shoplifting, street offences, anti-social behaviour and issues linked to the night-time economy, including alcohol-related disorder and violence against women.

Officers will carry out hotspot patrols on busy shopping days and at festive events, working closely with shops, venues and local organisations to address community concerns. Night safety marshals will also operate in Worthing to safeguard vulnerable people.

Sussex Police said diversionary activities for young people and additional high-visibility patrols have already produced positive results earlier in the year, with thousands of extra patrol hours leading to arrests and significant public engagement. Senior officers and the Police and Crime Commissioner said the increased presence aims to keep town centres safe throughout winter and ensure residents and visitors can take part in seasonal activities with confidence.
