Littlehampton bonfire event future uncertain as membership declines

The future of Littlehampton’s long running bonfire celebrations has been thrown into doubt after organisers warned of declining membership and rising pressures on volunteers.

The Littlehampton Bonfire Society says its annual event, which attracts around 20000 spectators each year, is increasingly difficult to sustain due to a shortage of volunteers. The free event costs more than £35,000 to stage and relies heavily on members to carry out essential tasks including preparation, fundraising and clean up operations. Organisers say membership has reached an all time low, with an ageing core group now responsible for delivering the event.

Despite the challenges, the 2026 celebration is scheduled to take place on October 24 rather than around Halloween, although it will be run by a reduced team. The society is appealing for new members and volunteers of all ages to help secure the event’s future, highlighting the need for people able to assist with physically demanding work and torch making in the months leading up to the parade and fireworks display.
