Man pleads guilty to manslaughter after pensioner dies in Worthing

A man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter following the death of a pensioner in Worthing, Sussex Police have confirmed.

Arno Engels, 40, of no fixed address, admitted killing 80-year-old Anthony Scarrott during a plea hearing at Hove Crown Court.

Police said the victim, known as Tony, was found seriously injured at an address in Westcourt Road, Worthing, on Thursday, September 11. He was taken to hospital but died three days later on Sunday, September 14. Investigators established that Engels, who knew Mr Scarrott, had slapped him across the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head.

Engels was initially arrested on suspicion of assault and later charged with murder before admitting manslaughter. He has been remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced at Hove Crown Court on March 25.
