Old Bakehouse in Tarring to be transformed into new wine bar

A former cafe in Tarring is set to become a new wine bar following approval from Adur and Worthing Councils.
The Old Bakehouse on High Street, which closed in July 2023, will be partially converted into a licensed social space offering wine and locally sourced cold food platters. The ground floor will serve as a wine bar, while the upper floor will continue to house a hairdressing business alongside a new community room. External seating will be provided in the rear garden and courtyard areas, with a total capacity of 60 patrons inside and out.
The new venue, proposed by Chris and Shelley Baxter—owners of The Refreshment Rooms micro-pub in Worthing—has drawn both support and objections from residents. Concerns raised included noise and antisocial behaviour, although supporters welcomed the development as a positive addition to the area. Sussex Police advised that local crime levels should be considered in operational planning, and The Worthing Society has backed the application.
