Police called after pedestrian injured outside Worthing election count

Emergency services were called to Worthing Leisure Centre after a pedestrian suffered minor injuries in an incident involving a vehicle outside the venue following local election counts.

The incident happened near the main entrance to the leisure centre on Friday evening, May 8, shortly after counts for Adur District Council, Worthing Borough Council and West Sussex County Council had concluded.

Sussex Police attended alongside South East Coast Ambulance Service. Police confirmed that the incident involved a pedestrian and a car, and that minor injuries were reported.

People leaving the venue were advised to use an alternative exit while emergency services dealt with the incident.

A person identified publicly on social media as the driver has denied that the vehicle made contact with the pedestrian.

In a Facebook comment, he said: “The police reviewed the CCTV footage and confirmed that I never touched the woman.”

Radio Worthing has not independently verified the contents of the CCTV footage. No further details about the circumstances of the incident have been confirmed.

The incident came after an eventful day at the leisure centre, where visitors had earlier been told to remain inside the building due to a swarm of bees outside the main entrance. The swarm later dispersed.

The local election results announced at the venue saw Labour lose overall control of Worthing Borough Council, leaving the authority under no overall control, while Labour retained control of Adur District Council.
