Police investigate 200-vehicle car meet after reports of dangerous driving in Worthing

Police are continuing to investigate a large car meet involving around 200 vehicles that took place in Worthing, following reports of dangerous and anti-social driving. The gathering occurred on Friday night, January 9, with vehicles meeting on Southdownview Way at around 9.15pm.
Sussex Police issued a 48-hour Section 35 Dispersal Order covering the county, giving officers temporary powers to prevent further gatherings and require vehicles to leave the area. Police said the vehicles later moved on towards Hove, Peacehaven and Burgess Hill before eventually leaving the county.
One driver was initially detained for failing to stop and was reported for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition, while multiple vehicle registrations were recorded for further enquiries.
Inspector Jim Bowen said officers disrupted the car meet to prevent it moving to additional locations, adding that the dispersal order was intended to protect the public from harassment and distress and to deter crime and disorder. Police have encouraged anyone with concerns or information to contact them via 101, or 999 in an emergency.
