RNLI issues coastal safety warning as warm weather draws visitors to Sussex beaches

The RNLI has issued a coastal safety warning as temperatures are set to reach 24°C in Sussex and Surrey, prompting an expected rise in visitors to the region’s beaches.

With the early May bank holiday approaching, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is urging members of the public to choose lifeguarded beaches and follow key safety advice when visiting the coast. While air temperatures are expected to be warm, the RNLI warns that water temperatures remain dangerously cold.

Gareth Morrison, RNLI head of water safety, reminded beachgoers to swim between red and yellow flags and follow the ‘Float to Live’ advice if caught in difficulty. He said this involves tilting the head back, submerging the ears, relaxing, and using hands to stay afloat before calling for help or swimming to safety. “It’s OK if your legs sink – we all float differently,” he added.

The RNLI operates lifeguarded beaches across the South East, including Littlehampton at weekends and bank holidays from 3 May. Ed Stevens, the regional lifeguarding lead, stressed the importance of checking lifeguard availability and timings on the RNLI website. Lifeboat crews across the south remain on standby around the clock to respond to emergencies.
