School crossing patrol officers to wear body cameras

School crossing patrol officers in West Sussex are set to begin wearing body cameras to improve safety while on duty.

The scheme is being introduced at selected sites in response to reports of dangerous driving, drivers failing to stop at crossings, and verbal abuse towards officers. West Sussex County Council stated the cameras aim to protect staff, deter unsafe behaviour, and improve road safety for children and pedestrians.

The decision follows a four-week trial earlier this year, which saw a 50 per cent drop in incidents when cameras were worn. Cameras will be deployed at sites identified through incident data, with locations reviewed annually.

Councillor Erika Woodhurst-Trueman, cabinet member for highways and transport, said the cameras will help protect staff while encouraging safer behaviour from drivers. She added that the move would help families feel more confident about walking to school.

Councillor Sam Raby, cabinet member for children, young people and learning, said the cameras would provide extra support to keep officers safe and give parents peace of mind.

Footage from the cameras may be used to support police investigations, though the council emphasised the primary aim is to prevent anti-social behaviour. Body cameras are also being introduced for network compliance officers who monitor highway activities.
