Shoreham Port Promises to Retain Public Access to Southwick Beach

Shoreham Port Authority has pledged to retain public access to Southwick beach “forever” if its proposed purchase of the site is approved by Adur District Council.

The council is considering selling the beach area next to Basin Road South, including the promenade, public toilets, beach chalets, car park, and Carat’s Café, citing a lack of funding to maintain the site. The port authority, which already owns the surrounding land, expressed interest in purchasing the site and has now publicly committed to preserving public access.

A spokesman for Shoreham Port stated that the port has invested heavily in nearby beaches and is working with the Environment Agency on a major coastal protection scheme. The port also confirmed that, if the sale proceeds, it will integrate the area’s coastal protection requirements into its existing plans and work with the community to ensure the area remains accessible and enjoyable for all.

Adur District Council described Shoreham Port as the “ideal custodian” of the land, highlighting its local economic contribution, community involvement, and expertise in building coastal defences. The proposed sale will be discussed by the Adur and Worthing Councils’ joint strategic committee on 8 July. Existing agreements with beach chalet tenants and Carat’s Café would transfer to the port if the deal is finalised.
