Sussex Police launches operation targeting illegal e-bikes and e-scooters

Sussex Police has launched a new operation targeting the illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters following a rise in reports across the county.

Operation Scramble will involve Neighbourhood Policing Teams working with roads policing officers to provide education, engagement and enforcement. Police received 2,504 reports of illegal e-bike and e-scooter use in the 12 months to June 2026, up 53.7 per cent from 1,629 during the previous 12 months. Police said 25.6 per cent of reports related to antisocial or dangerous riding and 51.8 per cent related to suspected drug activity.

Sussex Police said officers will work with schools, colleges, parents and carers to educate young people about the risks and legislation. Where riders had been identified, 52.9 per cent were aged 25 or under and 35.5 per cent were teenagers or children. Police recorded eight serious injuries in collisions involving e-scooters or e-bikes during 2026, and said enforcement against illegal use will continue alongside the new operation.
