Sussex Police urge drivers to ‘take one extra look’ to protect cyclists and motorcyclists

Sussex Police are encouraging drivers to ’take one extra look’ at junctions as part of a national effort to reduce road collisions involving cyclists and motorcyclists. The campaign, which runs until 15 June, highlights the disproportionate number of serious accidents affecting riders, particularly young men.
The initiative is part of the National Police Chiefs’ Council Two-Wheel campaign and comes amid data showing that many serious collisions occur when drivers fail to look properly, especially at junctions and roundabouts. Sussex and Surrey Police are increasing patrols throughout the campaign period to promote safer driving and deter irresponsible behaviour on the roads.
Officers are also promoting BikeSafe training courses to improve rider skills and awareness. Inspector Matt Wightwick from the Roads Policing Unit stressed the importance of all road users taking responsibility, stating that if everyone took one extra look, many collisions could be prevented. The campaign builds on the success of last year’s #OneExtraLook initiative and is supported by the Sussex Police Road Safety Team and Surrey RoadSafe.
