Tarmac-Like Smell Reported Across Worthing Area

A strong odour resembling tarmac or gas has been reported across large parts of Worthing, Goring, Sompting, and surrounding areas, prompting over 60 calls to gas companies.

The reports began on 6 July following a thunderstorm and heavy rain, which experts say can increase the likelihood of odours such as tarmac, bitumen, or chemicals becoming more noticeable due to evaporation from roads or contaminated ground. At this time, no current industrial activity or work at sites in Worthing has been linked to the smell.

Some social media posts have speculated about the possibility of a gas cloud drifting from the Isle of Wight, but there has been no official confirmation of any incident or environmental event. While similar odour events have occurred, such as the 2013 incident when a chemical plant in Rouen, France, caused a foul smell across southern England, no verified evidence supports this theory in the current case.

In 2024, residents reported persistent creosote odours in central Worthing. The smell was linked to coal tar contamination from the old gas works site on Lyndhurst Road. At the time, Worthing Borough Council confirmed the source, apologised, and stated that air quality was monitored and there was no health risk.
