Temporary road closure in Worthing for new school crossing installation

A temporary road closure has been announced in Worthing to allow the installation of a new zebra crossing near a local school.

West Sussex County Council has issued a Temporary Closure Order affecting the eastern end of St Lawrence Avenue, from its junction with South Farm Road westwards for approximately 30 metres. The closure came into effect on March 30 and is expected to remain in place until April 10 while the highway improvement scheme is carried out.

The council said the restriction is necessary to ensure the works can be completed safely. Access to properties within the affected section will be maintained throughout, and signed diversion routes will be in place for road users. The order may remain in force for up to 18 months if required, although works are expected to finish much sooner.

The new crossing is being funded by Active Travel England following a successful application by Worthing High School through the Community Highway Scheme. The scheme aims to improve safety for pupils travelling to and from the school.
