Tree Preservation Order Issued to Protect Historic Goring Hedge

A Tree Preservation Order (TPO) has been implemented to protect one of Goring seafront’s historic tamarisk hedges after it was found to have been cut back without permission.

The order was approved by Worthing’s Planning Committee following reports of unauthorised work along Marine Crescent.

The hedge is a prominent feature of the Goring seafront and is carefully managed by the council’s parks team. It provides an important habitat for pollinators such as bumblebees, wasps and butterflies during the summer months, and is normally cut back in winter to avoid disturbing nesting wildlife.

The new order makes it clear that private work on the hedge is not permitted. The council says it will continue to carry out annual maintenance but now has the power to take enforcement action against anyone cutting the hedge without consent.
