Warning after venomous fish found on Littlehampton beach

A warning has been issued after venomous weever fish were found washed up on Littlehampton beach. Arun District Council advised beachgoers to wear suitable footwear and avoid touching the fish, which can deliver a painful sting.
The weever fish, which are among the few venomous species in UK waters, typically remain buried in the sand but can raise a venomous spine in defence if disturbed. Although their sting is not life-threatening, it can cause significant pain and distress, particularly for young children.
The council said the fish are likely to be removed by the next high tide but recommended caution in the meantime. Residents and visitors are advised to wear beach shoes and seek prompt first aid if stung; such as immersing the affected area in hot water. The Wildlife Trusts also encourage responsible behaviour while rock pooling, including replacing any rocks and returning any marine life found.
