Weekly food waste collections to begin across Adur and Worthing from September

Weekly food waste collections will begin in phases across Adur and Worthing from September as part of the Government’s Simpler Recycling programme.

Households will receive a kitchen caddy, an outdoor food waste bin and compostable liners during August, while flats will receive an internal caddy and access to a shared communal food waste bin.

Residents will be asked to separate food waste such as plate scrapings, peelings and tea bags into the new containers for weekly collection on the same day as their existing recycling or general waste service. The collected waste will be taken to a processing plant near Horsham where it will be converted through anaerobic digestion into renewable energy and biofertiliser for use by local farmers.

Letters are being sent to households whose collections will begin in September, with starter packs providing each property’s collection start date. Properties not contacted during August will be included in a later phase of the rollout.

Adur and Worthing councillors said the new service is expected to increase recycling rates while helping residents reduce the amount of food they waste.
