West Sussex council leader launches bid to become first Sussex mayor

The leader of West Sussex County Council, Paul Marshall, has announced his bid to become the first directly elected Mayor of Sussex.
He is seeking the Conservative Party nomination ahead of the 2026 election, following government approval for a new mayoral strategic authority covering the entire Sussex area, including Brighton and Hove.
Mr Marshall, who has led the county council since 2019, said he wants to deliver “bold, experienced leadership” for a region with 1.7 million residents. The new mayor will take on responsibilities including economic development, transport, infrastructure, inward investment, housing, and skills, as well as assuming the functions of the current Police and Crime Commissioner.
Citing his oversight of a £2 billion annual budget and an £800 million capital programme, Mr Marshall argued he has the experience to address key issues such as housing and public services. He also emphasised the importance of supporting both the older population and attracting working-age residents to sustain economic growth.
