West Sussex highways teams respond to 201 incidents following storms

West Sussex County Council’s highways teams responded to 201 incidents over five days after two storms brought severe weather to the county. The emergency callouts, recorded between Thursday 22 October and Monday 26 October, were 14 per cent above the monthly average.
Of the 201 incidents, 195 involved fallen trees, while others included flooded roads, highway voids and faulty traffic signals. The council said it had increased resources ahead of the storms to help keep roads clear and minimise disruption. The number of emergencies was the highest recorded since February 2026.
Erika Woodhurst-Trueman, the council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said the response demonstrated the work involved in preparing for severe weather and clearing up damage. She said the council would continue working to minimise disruption and maintain the resilience of the road network throughout the winter.
