West Sussex roads to receive £79m highways investment

More than £79 million is set to be invested in maintaining and improving roads across West Sussex during 2026/27, according to a new highways report.

West Sussex County Council said the £79.2 million investment, backed by the council and Department for Transport, will fund 75 resurfacing projects, 30 road repair schemes and treatments designed to protect and extend the life of more than 144 miles of roads. The report says an estimated 32,280 potholes were repaired during 2025/26.

The condition of the county’s A, B and C roads has remained broadly stable in recent years despite rising traffic levels, ageing infrastructure and more frequent extreme weather, according to the report.

Councillor Erika Woodhurst-Trueman, the council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said preventative treatments and targeted repairs were being used to make the best use of available funding.
