Worthing bathing water sites receive improved classifications

Two of Worthing’s designated bathing water sites have received improved ratings in the Environment Agency’s latest annual classifications. Goring Beach and the central site near Heene Road have both been upgraded from satisfactory to good, while Beach House remains rated as poor.
The Environment Agency tests three coastal locations in Worthing weekly between May and September to monitor bacteria levels and identify pollution sources. Worthing Borough Council said it continues to work with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to address ongoing issues, particularly around Beach House, where investigations into pollution sources such as misconnections are under way. The council added that this is only the second year of testing at Beach House and Goring Beach following their designation in May 2024.
Plans include improving public signage, supporting businesses in proper wastewater disposal, and expanding community involvement in monitoring, with a citizen science facility expected next year. The Yellow Fish campaign has also been introduced across Worthing to highlight that road surface drains lead directly to the sea, encouraging residents to ensure only rainwater enters them.
