Worthing Blue Plaque Corrected After Date Error Uncovered

A Blue Plaque honouring Marian Frost at Worthing Library is to be amended just days after its unveiling, following the discovery of incorrect birth and death dates.

The plaque, unveiled by The Worthing Society on 6 June, initially stated that Frost lived from 1877 to 1936. However, West Sussex County Council has since confirmed her correct dates as 27 September 1876 to 27 December 1935. The confusion arose because Frost’s death was registered in early 1936, and tributes were published that year, leading to a misinterpretation of the records.

Council officials have clarified that the supplier will amend the plaque without recasting it, ensuring no additional cost to the taxpayer. They reiterated the importance of recognising Marian Frost’s legacy as a pioneering head librarian and key figure in the creation of Worthing Library in 1908.
