Worthing cinema seeks support after Union Place car park closure

A Worthing town centre cinema has appealed for public support following the closure of the Union Place car park as part of a major redevelopment project.
The car park, previously operated by National Car Parks, closed on March 5 to make way for the Union Gardens development, which will deliver 216 new homes, green space and a replacement parking facility. The immediate loss of hundreds of parking spaces has raised concerns among local businesses, particularly those reliant on evening trade.
In a message to customers, the Connaught Cinema said it shared the frustration caused by the closure but highlighted that alternative parking remains available. The venue urged residents to continue attending screenings, stating that ongoing support was especially important during the transition period.
Worthing Borough Council confirmed it partnered with Roffey Homes in 2022 to bring forward the scheme, which covers more than a hectare of land between High Street and the Connaught Theatre. The developer purchased the site for £4.1 million, with planning permission granted in March 2024, and construction is expected to take around three years.
NCP, who run the Union Place Car Park, announced yesterday that they were entering administration.
