Worthing FC fans targeted with abuse and eggs after Welling United match

Welling United have pledged to identify and ban those responsible for throwing eggs and directing homophobic abuse at Worthing FC fans after Saturday’s National League South fixture.

Supporters of Worthing FC were targeted with abuse and had eggs thrown at them as they walked to the railway station following their team’s 2-0 defeat at Welling United on Saturday. The incidents, which occurred outside the Park View Road ground, have been widely condemned by both clubs, with Welling stating the actions were carried out by individuals who attend matches infrequently.

In a public statement, Welling United described the behaviour as “deplorable” and confirmed they are cooperating fully with police investigations. The club stated that if the individuals involved are identified, they will be issued with bans from all Welling matches and the club will support football banning orders to exclude them from all levels of the sport. They also committed to reviewing stadium security measures.

Worthing FC manager Chris Agutter expressed disappointment over the post-match events and also noted abuse directed at his team from some Welling fans during the game. He criticised the matchday atmosphere and raised concerns about the pitch condition, which he said contributed to his team’s defeat. Despite the setback, Worthing remain top of the table and face Hornchurch next in a key fixture.
