Worthing Ice Rink approved to remain in Steyne Gardens until 2033

Worthing Ice Rink has been given permission to continue operating in Steyne Gardens until February 2033, following unanimous approval from Worthing Borough Council’s planning committee. The rink will be permitted to operate for up to 110 days each year between November and February, with a planning report stating that it contributes to the vibrancy of the town during the Christmas period and supports plans to regenerate the town centre.

Richard Bradley, director of Town Centre Ice Rinks Ltd, told councillors that the seasonal rink represented an investment in the local community, with benefits for sport, education, wellbeing and the local economy. He said more than 1,000 children had been given the opportunity to experience skating through previous seasons, while more than 450 pupils had attended educational and recreational visits.

Concerns were raised by the Worthing Society and residents about the condition of the grass after the rink is removed, although Mr Bradley said damage could also result from other temporary events and maintenance vehicles using Steyne Gardens.

The planning report said grass maintenance had not been completed this year because of construction work associated with the next stage of Worthing’s Heat Network. A condition requiring the land to be restored after removal of the rink will continue to apply, with work to be completed by March 15 each year. Councillor Richard Nowak said maintaining the grass should be prioritised and suggested collecting rainwater from the rink’s roof for use during restoration.

Planning officers recommended approval and councillors voted unanimously in favour.
