A man has been charged with murder following the death of 80-year-old Anthony Scarrott, who was found with serious injuries at a house in Worthing last week.
Sussex Police confirmed that detectives launched a murder investigation after Mr Scarrott, known as Tony, died in hospital on Sunday, 14 September. He had been discovered with serious injuries at an address in Westcourt Road around 8.20pm on Thursday, 11 September. An air ambulance attended the scene and forensic teams have since been conducting investigations at the property.
Police said 39-year-old Arno Engels, of no fixed address, has been charged with murder and remanded in custody to appear before Crawley Magistrates’ Court. Engels was initially arrested on suspicion of assault and released on bail before later being re-arrested on suspicion of murder.
Detective Inspector Amanda Zinyama, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, described the incident as “tragic” and confirmed that the victim and suspect were known to each other. Police have appealed for anyone who may have seen or assisted Mr Scarrott in Westcourt Road between 7.20pm and 7.40pm on the night of the incident to contact them. An ongoing police presence will remain at the address while enquiries continue.
