Worthing Pier decking donated to community group for reuse

Timber removed from Worthing Pier during maintenance works has been donated to a local community group to be repurposed into handmade items for homes and gardens.

Worthing Borough Council recently reopened the western entrance to the pier after completing a project to replace ageing decking between the entrance kiosk and the concrete base that supports the Denton Lounge. The programme involved lifting old boards, replacing worn steel beams beneath them, installing new timber bearers and fitting replacement decking.

Instead of discarding the removed timber, the council donated sections to the Worthing branch of Men in Sheds. Volunteers at the group plan to recycle the wood into practical items such as furniture and planters. Council engineers are also continuing work with structural specialists on plans to repair a damaged section of the pier later this summer.
