Worthing police investigator charged over alleged misconduct with vulnerable woman

A former Sussex Police investigator based in Worthing has been charged with misconduct in public office, following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

David Gamlin, 58, is accused of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a vulnerable woman he encountered while leading a police investigation in which she was the complainant. The alleged misconduct is said to have taken place between June and September 2021, during his time with Worthing CID.

The IOPC began its investigation in September 2021 after a mandatory referral from Sussex Police. After concluding their inquiry in August 2022, a file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which subsequently requested additional work before deciding to bring charges. Mr Gamlin, who left the police in March 2023, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 2 June 2025.
