Worthing road changes as new puffin crossing installed

A Worthing road will see temporary changes to traffic restrictions while a new puffin pedestrian crossing is installed near West Worthing Railway Station.

West Sussex County Council confirmed that Valencia Road will be closed from its junction with Tarring Road for five metres southwards from 15 September until 5 December. During the works, the one-way traffic rule on Valencia Road will be suspended, and some parking bays will be closed to allow vehicles to pass in both directions. Alternative routes will be signposted, and access to properties will remain available.

The new crossing, approved on 22 August, will be installed on Tarring Road just west of its junction with Valencia Road. The project forms part of the council’s Active Travel Plan, aiming to improve pedestrian links to West Worthing Station and local shops. Audible signals will be fitted to the crossing, though these will be silenced overnight.

The scheme was developed following pedestrian traffic surveys and reports of collisions in the area, highlighted in the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan adopted by Adur and Worthing Councils in 2020. Parking restrictions on the north side of Tarring Road have also been amended to accommodate the new crossing.
