Worthing seafront heat network works to continue through July

Construction work linked to the Worthing Heat Network will continue along two sections of Worthing seafront throughout July, with developers saying the latest phase is expected to be completed before the school summer holidays.
The work, taking place near the Splash Pad, will involve installing underground pipework using directional drilling rather than open-trench excavation. Pedestrian diversion routes, including an accessible route, will be in place while access along the promenade remains available.
The Worthing Heat Network is a district heating system designed to provide low-carbon heating and hot water through underground pipes. Its first phase already supplies buildings including Worthing Town Hall, the Assembly Hall, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, Portland House and the Connaught Theatre, with Worthing Hospital due to join the network. Hemiko said Steyne Gardens has now been cleared of construction equipment to allow summer events including Worthing Pride and the Worthing Summer Fete to take place.
Hemiko said the work is focused on two small sections of the promenade and that the vast majority of the town centre, beaches, promenade and visitor attractions remain open, with parking available throughout the town. The project has been under construction for two years and is intended to replace gas boilers with a low-carbon district heating network.
Worthing Borough Council secured more than £7 million in government funding for the scheme, alongside a £40 million investment from Hemiko, with future phases planned to extend the network to more businesses and homes.
