Worthing shop sign falls onto pavement sparking council safety review

A shop sign fell from a premises in Worthing, narrowly missing pedestrians and prompting a council investigation into the incident.

The sign from Phone Fix in Montague Street collapsed onto the pavement on Wednesday (2 September). Witnesses said it came down just as people were walking past, but fortunately no one was struck. A shop worker explained that rainwater had rotted the wood behind the sign over time.

The incident was reported to Worthing Borough Council, which confirmed it contacted the business to ensure the signage was removed and the area made safe.

A council spokesperson said public safety was its priority and the authority would be working with the business and property owner to establish why the sign fell, to prevent similar incidents in future.
